About the Force Converter
Force is any interaction that changes the motion of an object. In the SI system the unit is the Newton (N), defined as the force needed to accelerate 1 kilogram at 1 m/s². The pound-force (lbf) is used throughout US engineering. Kilogram-force (kgf) is common in older European technical literature. The dyne — 10⁻⁵ N — appears in CGS-based scientific work such as surface science and electrostatics.
Quick facts
- ›One newton equals the weight of approximately 102 grams on Earth's surface
- ›A typical car engine produces 1,000–5,000 N of thrust force at the wheels
- ›The gravitational force between two 1 kg masses 1 m apart is only 6.67 × 10⁻¹¹ N
- ›A poundal is the force needed to accelerate 1 pound-mass at 1 ft/s² — about 0.138 N
